Lots of people seem to have forgotten who they are or haven’t really know who they are. If you want to be successful in every aspect of your life, then you have to read this article from the beginning to the end. It’s not late to know yourself or to start focusing on knowing who you are.

So many people don’t know who they are and what they want so, they just end up following the trend or the society. Society is not you. You are you.

WHAT IS SELF AWARENESS?

According to Debbie Ford, self-awareness is the ability to take an honest look at your life without any attachment to it being right or wrong, good or bad.

Self-awareness is one’s ability to identify and understand their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. As a result, you can monitor yourself better and create a more purposeful life. You can also discover what it is that you can and can’t control to make yourself happy.

Categories of self awareness are:

What am I thinking?

What am I doing?

What am I feeling?

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW YOURSELF

Possessing self-awareness will:

Help in understanding others, and developing and maintaining healthy relationship with people around you.

There is no way you can be able to develop yourself if you don’t know yourself. So to say, self-awareness is the first step to take when you want to really start developing yourself.

Lead to healthier reactions to external factors

Boost your productivity and success

Enhance your ability to make positive change

Bolster your self-esteem

Strengthen your relationships

If you don’t know yourself, you won’t know what you are worth. You won’t even know your value. And you will tend to easily accept public opinion of who you are. You will always be seeking external praise.

Give you a better understanding of what you want and/or need

Increase your chances of getting what you want and/or need

Improve your decision making

Help you manage your emotions

When you know who you are, you can now attract to yourself only what vibrates in harmony with you.

There is a quote by James Allen “Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound”.

HOW TO KNOW YOURSELF: THE SELF AWARENESS TEST

Here are some questions that will help you know yourself. These questions are supposed to be answered when you have gotten your book and pen and seated in a very serene environment. This test needs your time, it’s not something you start and finish in like 3 or 5 hours, it’s a continuous process that you need to, keep on asking yourself questions at every interval. To be self-aware means to always be conscious of yourself.

For these questions to be really effective for you, you will need to: be honest with yourself, when answering all the questions. Because honesty is the best way of knowing yourself. Find time to meditate. Meditation helps in becoming self-aware.

The questions are:

Who are you?

This question right here, doesn’t mean what profession or who are you, like I’m a doctor or lawyer no. This question means what you represent.

2. What distracts you?

It could be movies. Social media. Some certain friends. Or doing something.

3. What makes you happy?

By this, I’m not asking what people can do to make you happy. We are talking about self. So it should be, what makes you happy from within; you without anybody.

4. What makes you sad?

5. What are your likes?

6. What are your dislikes?

7. What are your strengths?

8. What motivates you?

9. What makes you angry?

In this aspect what is capable of making you angry. What can someone do to make you angry? What can one do to make you exceed the limit of your patience? What is that thing that you can hear or see that will trigger your anger?

10. What are your core value?

11. Are you aware of your emotion?

Do you know how you feel at every moment? Can you be able to detect your emotion changes and what caused it?

12. Why do you act and react the way you do?

Do you know what caused it, was it a childhood trauma or experience. Was it something someone did to you? Why do you react to issues the way you do?

13. Who do you want to be in life?

14. Are you in control of your emotions?

15. Why do you behave the way you do?

16. Where are you in life now?

17. Where are you going?

18. Where do you want to be in your life?

19. What are your weaknesses?

20. Can you name your deepest fear triggers?

FINAL THOUGHT

Our human nature makes it incredibly challenging to be self-aware. We’re dealing with outdated brain functions and survival instincts that are rooted in ancient times. As a result, we often become caught up in defensive emotions and biases that prevent us from being self-aware.

The best part is that these defenses make us think we’re self-aware when in reality, only about 10-15% of people are truly self-aware.

But with the help of this article, I believe you will not only know what self-awareness is all about, but you will become self-aware if you answer all these questions truthfully. There are many other questions to help you become more self-aware but these are the basics. When answered well and with constant practice, you will definitely be successful in knowing yourself and also successful in every aspect of your life.

Four years later when I was in my final year in school, Ahmed traveled to the city to make money so that once I graduated from school, we will get married.
When he left, things started changing. The long distance started affecting our relationship. I couldn’t stay long again on the phone with him.

There was another person. Despite the fact that everybody realized I was for Ahmed alone, I didn’t permit it prevent me from spending time with Musa. Musa was somehow related to Ahmed and he loved me too and not just love, he kept showering me with gifts and all that I asked for. News got to Ahmed about my affair, and he returned immediately.

He wanted to hear from me if all they told him was true. I didn’t deny it because my attitude changed. He decided we should get married immediately so I can become his.
I told him if he could buy me a smartphone then we would get married. He begged that I give him time to find more money and he would buy it for me but I remained adamant.
He again drew a tattoo with blade on his right hand to show me how much he loved me. This time, it was a love symbol. But it didn’t move me, because I wasn’t into him like before.

He reminded me of the blood covenant we made in the early stage of our relationship and asked if that doesn’t matter to me anymore. I kept on demanding for a smartphone before I would listen to any of his words.

Musa was smart enough. He bought me a smartphone and gave me other things too: like clothes, bags, shoes. My father was not in support of my relationship with Musa but I didn’t care. I thought I knew what I wanted.
Ahmed had never slept with me. He always loved me and wanted our first sex to be memorable. He wanted everything to be after the wedding, so that I will still have the respect of our people.
Musa on the other hand, started asking to sleep with me. He asked how I will prove my love for him if I don’t have sex with him. He was the one showing me what love was with material things but I haven’t shown him that I love him. And to prove my love for him, I decided to sleep with him.

Habiba started reminiscing on how she made love with Musa. “One rainy day, we were together in his parent’s house because they went out. He suggested I stay back till the rain stopped but I insisted on leaving. He then started touching me slowly and began kissing me. I liked what he was doing and so I stayed back. He advanced from kissing me to caressing my breast and then opening my shirt and unfastening my skirt.

When he noticed I wasn’t doing anything to him, he started teaching me what to do. It was very obvious that I was still a virgin. He proceeded with the romancing and afterwards leisurely and tenderly pushed his manhood inside me, I let out a sharp cry of pain. But when he continued thrusting in and out, I started enjoying it and relaxed. After that night we slept off”. Habiba wished she could tell her daughter about the experience but she couldn’t give her such details.

When she got herself back, she continued talking to her daughter again. “The walls has ears” they said. Before I could get over the enjoyment of the night I decided to sleep with him, Ahmed was already at the door thumping vigorously. When I came out the first greeting was “did you have sex with Musa?” I denied it immediately and he stared at me for what seems like thirty minutes before dashing out again.

He stopped coming to check on me. I didn’t care the slightest bit. I was having fun with Musa. After that night, we had intercourse over and over and again till I got pregnant.
When I denied I didn’t sleep with Musa, Ahmed listened but didn’t believe me. But when the rumor spread that I was pregnant, he came again and asked me, I was unable to deny it once more. I broke out crying. I was crying not because I hurt him but because Musa denied me. He said he wasn’t responsible for my pregnancy.
When Ahmed saw me crying, he just looked at me, shaked his head and left. That was the last time I ever saw him again.

Rumor had it that he traveled to a far away land to get over me. I struggled alone, with no one to help me, my father was very disappointed in me and chased me away from his house. I left to a city far away from the village and I have always avoided the village due to the disgrace.
It was during my striving period that your late father met me. We met and went gaga for one another but now he is dead.
What happened to the baby? Curious Zainab asked her mother.

Well. Zainab. the baby died. I was told that I will never bear children with any man that isn’t Ahmed’s child because of the blood covenant we made. And if any man insisted on marrying me, he will either choose to marry a barren woman or die after I give birth. When your father’s siblings learnt of this from their pastor, they loathed me with enthusiasm. Because their brother wouldn’t let me go. It was either me or he dies. So they left him to settle on his own choice.

I’m grateful he made me a mother but I regret ever making that blood covenant with Ahmed. I hope the future will be bright. Make sure you take care of your siblings, I will leave you with your aunty and will always come and check up on you all. Now go and sleep for the night has gone far.

I love you mum! Zainab said, hugged her mother and went to the room she shared with her siblings.

The Bond

Zainab’s mom had experienced damnation from all angle, everything began when she married a man from a different tribe she had a strong bond with and her father’s people loathed the mother from the first day she ventured her foot in their home for introduction. Her mom could recall the harsh gaze her sister-in-law gave her when the brother said “sister Tosin, this is the lady I want to marry”. The nerve of Zainab’s mom to simply go straight and embrace her after that sentence from the brother, made the sister-in-law disdain her with energy . People can literally hate you for no reason, Zainab’s mom said in her mind.

It’s been five years since their dad passed on. It was just Zainab, Aminu and Zara that the mother Habiba had, before he died. After his death, life has been very difficult for them, because the husband’s family came and took away the remaining property that the husband had. Leaving the family with nothing.

Habiba woke up one day and decided she was going to the city to find greener pasture. So, she left the three kids with her elder sister, who was happy to look after them since she didn’t bear children. The night before her departure, she decided to tell her children the truth about her past. She has been having the inclination that her past has come to haunt her but she didn’t want to truly believe it. She later decided to tell only Zainab her eldest daughter so she will know and then when her siblings come of age they might know too.

It all started when I was in primary 5. I lived in a small village with my parents, we were battling however we were blissful. Life wasn’t a bed of roses for us and so we knew when to talk about food and when not to.

When I entered primary 5, I would walk home from school through a certain route. And that was where I first met Ahmed. Ahmed was in Jss 2 when we first met and became friends. We became really close that everyone knew about us. Soon he started calling me his wife.

My parents, especially my mother was in support of us because he was from a good family. He would come to our house during the weekends to help my mother with all the necessary things she needed. My mother started blessing him one day and told me in his presence “Habiba the day you leave Ahmed’s life is the day you will suffer”.
She blessed my future marriage with Ahmed. At that time I was in love with him, I won’t lie but as the day progresses something else happened.

What happened? Zainab asked.
Hmmm!! Well, my mother kicked the bucket.

Life in the village became more difficult. I was about graduating from junior secondary school when this happened. Ahmed and I turned out to be exceptionally close. Everyone knew about us. They were all hanging tight for our big day. It was already too much that I was sent to school, they thought. This was because in my village, girls don’t go to school. They are trained at home on how to become a house wife. Taking a girl to school is just providing her ability to be insolent to her husband. That was their ideology.

When Ahmed graduated from secondary school. His elder brother took a knife one day and wrote my name on his left arm. It spouted blood that day but it later halted. At the point when he came to show me, I was crying on the grounds that the aggravation was much for himself and he did that to demonstrate the amount he cherished me.
