“Sister, you didn’t tell me you were raped another two times.”

“My dear, I don’t like talking about it, but I can’t tell you the complete story of Halima without telling you about the rape cases.”

“But why will she do that? It’s really a wicked thing to do to a friend.”

“Aisha, life is a place for the good and the bad, I don’t really take Halima as a bad person. Halima is a very good person, just that she didn’t want to work hard, she didn’t want to suffer, she wanted quick money. There are other things I haven’t told you that happened while I was staying with Halima.”

“I would like to hear it all. Please sister tell me, tell me everything. I am really enjoying your story and learning a lot from it already.”

“After I was raped by the robbers at Halima’s place, I went to the hospital and discovered that I was pregnant. When I came back, I didn’t know what to do, my life became miserable. I wondered what Mum and Dad would say when I told them that their precious virgin girl was pregnant. They thought I was still a virgin because I didn’t tell them about the first rape case when I was coming to Lagos. Life started tasting sour to me, everyday I stayed home thinking of what best to do. Halima advised me to abort the baby, but because I was not a murderer, I threw away the idea.

“One day, when Halima left for her meeting with the men, I wanted to take an overdose of a drug I bought, not to kill the child but to commit suicide.”

“Sister! You wanted to commit suicide?

“Yes Aisha. The suffering was too much, the trauma I was facing then was much and I was dying slowly out of depression. The first attempt was to cut my vein and die, but I didn’t muster enough courage to do that, so I decided to take an overdose of a drug I bought.”

“What happened? Who stopped you? Did Halima come back? Please tell me my ears are itching to hear your survival story.”

“Allah spoke to me.”

“What? Allah! How?”

“Well, when I wanted to take the drugs, a part of me started remembering how Allah saved me from dangerous things that have come my way. How a poisonous black snake climbed my body one day when I was sleeping inside the class in the night where I went for night reading, and how everybody was shouting at what was on my body and it didn’t hurt me. The snake just fell off my body and they killed it. The second time I saw a snake when I packed into my hostel, but the snake was also running away from me.” I chucked. “It wasn’t funny then, but immediately the snake saw me. It started running out, and I too ran as fast as my legs could carry me .

“That part of me also reminded me that Allah had a purpose why he created me, so why take my life when I hadn’t done what he sent me to do? Then I decided that suicide was not an option to end suffering or depression. Each time I remember the breath that I have that the dead don’t have, I always thank Allah for saving me from myself, from committing suicide.”

“What about the baby?”

“Aisha, allow me to tell you the story, or do you want me to summarize the story?”

“Ah, no oh, please tell me everything.”

“Then allow me to.”

“Okay oh.” She laughed and I patted her head and continued.

“Well the day I woke up and told Halima that I felt like I had sex, that was the day the baby died. I woke up feeling very unwell with a terrible headache. I went into the bathroom to shower and to know if I could get better. Immediately I poured water on my body, I saw blood everywhere. I shouted and called Halima, and she rushed me to the hospital. The doctor came and asked to speak with me, to ask me a few questions on how it happened, but Halima took him outside saying I needed rest; that he can talk to her or ask her any questions. When she came back, she refused to tell me what the doctor said. She only told me that I lost the baby. I cried because I was already enjoying being pregnant and because I lost my first child.

“I told Halima that I was feeling like someone who had sex, but she said that it was probably the pregnancy, or maybe I wanted to have sex. She laughed it off and I didn’t ask any questions again about it or about what the doctor said. Maybe the doctor had wanted to ask me questions about the pregnancy, but she had not allowed him to because she was behind everything. That was how I lost my first pregnancy; thanks to Allah for the kind of body I have, I don’t look like someone who had been pregnant before.

**********

“While I was with Halima and the job wasn’t forthcoming, I decided to apply for the job of a sales girl in a shopping mall. I wasn’t earning much, but I used it to support my siblings in school and started saving money for another business. I had come across an article online which talked about being your own boss, so I decided that I didn’t want to be a sales girl forever, that I wanted to be my own boss. I saved a lot of money, but not much to be able to start the business. So I decided to go to the bank and get a loan, but my proposal was rejected by the four banks I went to. They didn’t even look at it and told me it wouldn’t work.

“I was disappointed, I felt really bad but I never gave up. I continued trying my best to work hard and save some money, but then it seemed like nothing was happening. The money I had saved, I used them to take care of family problems. That was when I decided to follow Halima to the meeting with the men, because she told me that I will get the money I needed for the business in just one night or a maximum of two nights. But after the encounter with the man and the dogs and after Halima died, I didn’t know what else to do.

“Halima’s death really shook me, it was the last thing I ever expected. I didn’t know the facts about her death, but some of her friends said that it was a ritualist that was behind her death. When one dies, different stories are heard of that person, some good stories and some bad. Halima’s father blamed the mother for allowing her to have such freedom and for accepting things from her without asking where she got the money from. He swore that none of his children will ever go to Lagos again.

“Halima’s death changed my thinking about life and each time I remember her last words to me (advice the youth, don’t let them lead my kind of life), it always gets me thinking. How will I tell the world her story? She didn’t just tell people my story, that might be her friends and my friends, but she said I should tell the world her story.”

***********

“That word kept ringing in my head. “ ‘Tell the world my story.’ ” One day, I was using my phone when I saw an advert, showing how to learn blogging. I got interested in the advert and went further to make inquiries and I started learning how to blog. When I learnt how to blog, my first post was the story of Halima. I was surprised to see lots of viewers, people got interested in the story and started following me up to hear more. I quit that job because it wasn’t giving me enough time to research and post recent news on my blog. I developed my blog and started posting about different aspects of life—fashion, celebrities, education and lots of things.

“People started liking me and I started making money from my blogging. Maybe this was what Halima meant by saying let the world know about my story. I try my best to post things that are relevant in life, things that will help people. Before I knew what was happening, it was already five years since I started blogging and I am rich now. It was my hard work that brought me to where I am today. I own a car and a house, my parents and siblings are staying in the house I built for them and my mum and dad each have a car of their own. Every time I go for an interview, I always tell people about Halima. I feel she is watching me and I am always happy telling people that it was her last words on her dying bed that made me this successful.

“Last year I wanted to host a very big convention for the youths, you won’t believe that the banks who rejected me came asking to invest 100 million for the event. They came to my house, I didn’t have to go to them again. Life is funny and people are funny, that is why I always tell people “NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS”.

Blogging has not really been my dream, but being self-employed has been my dream, and now I am self-employed. People work for me, I create jobs for people and I have developed my business. It’s no longer a small business now but a very big business. Many people want to invest in my business. When I started, they didn’t know me, but now they all want to know and be my friends.

************

“Sister, don’t tell me you are through with your story oh.”

“What else do you want to hear?”. “What about Ayomide, don’t tell me you didn’t meet him again or even fall in love,” she said laughing.

“What do you know about love, this girl ? Anyways I met Ayo last year when I travelled to Benue for an event. I had wanted to go and thank them again, but I had forgotten the name of their place and where they stayed. He remembered me, it was difficult for me to recognise him, but when he introduced himself, I remembered him immediately. How could I forget the man who saved my life from the crocodiles? That was what I told him when he introduced himself to me. He had changed a whole lot; he was now tall and handsome and looked rich. And I guess he was married because I saw a ring on his finger.

“He told me that he had been following my blog, he said that he regretted not giving me his contact or even his address when I was leaving, because I told him I wanted to come back again and say thank you to him and his parents for helping me. I went and saw his parents, the house was more beautiful now than it was then. Ayomide was now a business man that excelled in his line of business. When we started discussing, he told me of how he suffered when he came to Lagos as well to hustle because nothing was working out for him in the village. He told me lots of things, how his uncle who brought him to Lagos duped him and left him stranded, he also told me of the number of times he had slept under the bridge just for shelter. His own life was even more difficult than mine was, but he is a man and I guess he took it as some of the challenges of life.

“He said it was one of his classmates that helped him with some money one day that he went to hustle and got into a fight with one street tout, and since then he picked up from there and that is what brought him to where he was today. He is happily married with two children. I met his whole family and he introduced me to his wife who was very beautiful as well and their children were lovely and adorable.

“I know you are disappointed. It’s written all over your face. You were waiting to hear that we started dating and probably will be getting married soon. Sorry not everyone who helps you must end up marrying you or dating you. Some people are brought to our life for a reason. We cross paths with people for a reason, a reason that might be either for the future or the present. Just like Halima, where do you think I would have been if I had not known Halima?

“Aisha, we have talked into the night again. It’s 4am in the morning and you are not even sleepy.”

“Sister, thank you very much for this story, I never knew you went through all these to attain this height, your story indeed had shown lots of things that happen in real life. Now I know many rich people or successful people today has a story, some good stories, some bad stories, while some terrible stories. I promise not to go back to my kind of life again, but to continue working hard to attain this height. I will never give up on my dreams of becoming a TV presenter. I will not go to get rich quick because it’s a scam and I will seize every opportunity that comes my way to be a better person.”

“I am happy to hear that from you, and please let it remain a secret that I was once pregnant and what Halima did to me. No one else should know about it please.”

“Okay, I promise.”

“I pray that Allah will help you and other youths to learn from our stories and also to be good and hard working and not just expect manna to fall from above.”

“Sister, when will you get married?”

“I think our discussion is over now, good night,” I said laughing.

“But sister, you need a good, tall, rich and handsome man to marry you because you deserve it.”

“Aisha please I don’t want to talk about marriage now, if it’s the will of Allah he will give me a good man and I will marry when he feels the time is right. Aisha please go to your room, I am sleepy and tired, I need rest.”

“Okay oh, let me sleep here with you so you will tell me about your dream husband tomorrow morning when you wake up.”

“Aisha no please go to your room, go to your room oh.” I jokingly pushed her to her room and made sure she locked the room before going to mine.

“Good night sister, I love you,” she said and I said I love you too Aisha, and smiled and locked my door. It might be one of her tricks to get me to tell her another story tomorrow, I won’t fall for it, I told myself and laughed.

Real Life Part 2

“Sister it’s evening already, it’s 4pm already. Please continue your story because my ears have been itching since yesterday.” I knew she wouldn’t forget to remind me once it was 4pm.

Aisha was my favourite cousin , she was a beautiful, tall and elegant girl of twenty. She liked storytelling and loved reading novels, articles and anything readable. She calls me her role model; she always said, “ ‘Sister, I want to be like you when I grow up.’ ” I still don’t know why she calls me ‘sister’ instead of my name or ‘aunty’ as is usual with other girls.

“ ‘Aunty is for married women, and I call you sister because I take you as a direct sister and not my cousin.’ ”

Aisha was in her 300 level in the University of Lagos where she is studying Mass Communication. She has been a good girl until she finished her 100 level and started going to school from her hostel. She had been living with her parents and going to school from home, but after checking the expenses involved in her going from home everyday, the parents decided to pay for a room in the hostel for her, and that was when everything about Aisha the innocent girl changed.

Without delay, I continued my story.

“ ‘I have come to Lagos,’ ” I had said to myself and to Halima’s hearing too. “ ‘It’s time to start hustling,’ ” I said again. Halima asked me to go for check up and make sure that I was alright and also to make sure that those robbers didn’t plant any seed in me. I went to the hospital and the doctor said that I was alright.

“ ‘You are okay now, they didn’t succeed,’ ” the doctor told me.

I was happy that at least I won’t have any hindrance in accomplishing my mission here. I went home rejoicing because I was free. Two weeks later, I had fruitlessly walked around the whole city of Lagos looking for a good job, without getting any. Halima had laughed at me, because she had warned me about job hunting.

“ ‘There is no job in this country and the ones that are left have already been occupied by ghosts,’ ” she always said to me whenever I told her that I was going to try my luck. The only jobs that I kept seeing were that of a sales girl or that of a nanny. I know I don’t have anything, but that kind of job would be belittling myself considering my educational level. I continued my journey of job hunting for almost two months without any success. Then I started considering doing what Halima was doing—she was always going out with different men. After my fruitless job hunting of two months, I decided to join Halima in her line of work.

“Halima was my friend. We met during our university days in the University of Maiduguri. We became very close friends, to the point that we shared secrets, but I knew that there were things she didn’t tell me about her life. Halima was a Muslim girl just like me but her way of life was totally different from the description of a Muslim girl. She dresses anyhow and always wears the latest things in fashion. It was from Halima that I always knew about the trending clothes, shoes and bags.

“One thing I was sure of, was that Halima did not make clean money. Although I don’t like concluding on things without proper evidence, I just knew that Halima was not going the right way. Her parents were not rich, they barely provided three-square meals a day, and they have lots of children. Halima was the eight child of her parents and she was the only one who had managed to go to school, when everything had been difficult, as the father had wanted her to get married to one Alhaji but she refused. When the pressure became too hot, she fled to Lagos and that was the last time she ever checked up on her father. She secretly sent money to her mother to pay for her siblings’ school fees and pay for other things.

“I liked Halima a lot, especially her courage and zeal for achieving her dream. Halima was a bright student then in school, she was intelligent too. She could write any exam and pass, but the only problem was that she was not always around in school to write them. She preferred giving money to the lecturers rather than writing those exams herself. That was the lifestyle she chose for herself, and as a friend of hers, I had tried my best to advise her, and also tried covering up for her every time. And she appreciated me by always buying the latest clothes, shoes and bags for me.”

**********

“One day, I decided to go with Halima to her meeting with one of her clients. When we got there at one of the clubs in Victoria Island, I didn’t need any prophet to tell me what they did because it was plain.

“ ‘Halima is into prostitution,’ ” I had said to myself. I decided to calm down and play along. After all this was what I wanted, I wanted to get rich quickly and that was when I decided to do whatever she was doing to get such money and to be rich just two years after graduation.

“She came to me and said, “ ‘You are no longer a virgin, so please don’t act like you are one. I know you have known all this while what I do for money, so don’t pretend let’s just go and start the business of the day.’ ”

“She introduced me to one man, he was young and handsome and looked very rich, his entire outlook spoke of immense wealth. I was happy that at least I was given a young man for a start. We started talking and he was fun to be with, I was enjoying the discussion, until he said it was time for us to go and do the business that will give me lots of money.

“He promised to give me half a million, and I was already wet just at the mention of the money. I had concluded that I would try my best to satisfy the man and keep him as my customer if he fulfilled what he just promised me. We went inside and I saw two girls already sitting down on the bed almost naked. I looked at him with questions written all over my face. He noticed my discomfort and said to me, “ ‘Please dear don’t worry, they are also part of the game.’ ”

“ ‘Part of the game, what game?’ ”

“He said that I would understand when the time comes, and immediately three dogs were led inside by a man who seemed to be his bodyguard because the guy was huge. The girls started laughing in a very devilish manner that got me really scared, but whether the laugh was supposed to be a seductive laugh for the dogs or the man, I didn’t know which one. The man turned to me and said that I should start pulling off my clothes, that the dogs already knew what to do.

“ ‘I don’t understand. Dogs? I will sleep with a dog?’ ” I asked to be very sure my ears were not deceiving me, and he answered and said yes.

“ ‘That is why I’m paying you half a million. I don’t usually pay that high, but because I like you and you look fruitful, I will pay you that high.’ ”

“ ‘I am sorry I didn’t know I will have to do it with a dog, please let me go.’ ”

“I didn’t even want to think about it, talk more about doing it. Although the money was tempting, but right that minute, I decided to suffer and make money instead of searching for money in the get rich quick scheme that my friends always talked about. That was when I discovered that the get rich quick scheme was a scam. I would rather suffer, work hard to make that money, than to get it this way or through any other get rich quick scheme.

“He increased the money to a million naira, very tempting but I rejected it and asked to leave. His bodyguard wanted to force me, but he asked him to let me go, so that I would come back and beg for it. He also added that that was how all the girls started and later they came back begging, and now he doesn’t pay them that high again because they blew their first chance.

“I couldn’t believe how girls could have such minds to sleep with a dog, an animal that was created for man to be in charge of. An animal mated with a fellow animal, and not with a human being. I left there, thanking Allah that they didn’t even try to force me. I promised Allah that minute that I would rather work hard to make money than to do any illegal stuff to make money. I left Halima there, and went home.

***********

“ ‘Hello! Please, is this Zainab on the line?’ ”

“ ‘Yes, please who are you?’ ”

“ ‘Ma I am sorry, but you will have to come to Adams hospital at Balogun Street, your friend Halima was rushed in here a few minutes ago.’ ”

“That word ‘hospital’, I detested the word hospital a lot. I checked my watch, and it was 4am in the morning. I hadn’t even slept up to 30 minutes before the call came in. I rushed immediately to the hospital; Lagos was always busy, so it wasn’t that difficult for me to get a taxi that conveyed me there. When I got there, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Halima was bleeding profusely, from every part of her body. All she could do was to whisper my name. That was what the doctors told me when I came, she had insisted that I come before any treatment would commence on her.

“ ‘Zainab, please forgive me for everything bad that I have done to you. I know you are mad at me but still stayed with me because I’m your friend. Remember that day that robbers attacked our house and raped you? It was I that planned it. I wanted you to hate the world just like I did and start doing what I did for money. And also the day you slept off and woke up telling me you were feeling like someone who had sex? I’m deeply sorry, because that day I drugged you, one of the men said that he would do anything to have you, And he promised to pay me half a million for that. I knew you wouldn’t agree so I decided to drug you. I am deeply sorry for all the bad things I have done to you,’ ” she said with tears mixed with blood running down her cheeks.

“ ‘Halima why?’ ” I shouted, crying, “ ‘what have I done to you? Why did you do all those things to me?’ ” I was crying, and I left the room and went outside to get some fresh air because I couldn’t take it any longer.

“ ‘Zainab, Zainab, please hear me out,’ ” she said with almost her last breath.

“When I was outside crying, I heard hurried footsteps, I turned and saw the doctors and nurses running into her room. I immediately forgot about the pain I was feeling and ran inside, I still didn’t want to lose a friendship of six years plus now. All she was still saying was my name, and when I came in she said,

“ ‘Zainab, please tell the youths my story, tell them to work hard instead of believing that getting rich quick schemes will help them. It’s better to work hard for all your earnings, please advise them for me. And please, I know I am a terrible person, but please find a place in your heart and forgive me.’ ”

“And that was when she started fighting for her life, the nurses escorted me outside the room and started working on her. They used the EKG on her but it didn’t work.

“ ‘At the count of three, we take it up. Are you ready? One, two, three—press it!’ ”

“ ‘Doctor, the patient is not responding,’ ” said the nurse.

“ ‘We’ll try again, let’s try again.’ ” They tried three consecutive times, but Halima didn’t respond, and I saw her spirit leaving her body.

“ ‘Time of death at 6am,’ ” a nurse said and came out to hold me.

“I had already fainted before they held me. I stayed unconscious for more than an hour, and when I regained consciousness, I saw myself lying on the bed of the hospital that I detested a lot, this was one of the reasons why I didn’t like going to the hospitals, because people rarely made it out alive.

Real Life Part 1

african, black woman, model

I decided to tell my cousin things about life, especially about my growth and development and also how my story has enlightened youths, those who think that the quick money scheme is the best. Hear my story and you will know that there are opportunities everywhere just that most people are in too much of a hurry to see it.

********

“Knock, knock, knock, please open the door for me, the rain is very heavy outside, please I beg you. I will never try staying out late again, I promise you, please try and understand me.” That was my cousin Aisha, begging me to open the door for her.

Who would have thought that I would someday become this famous? I even found it hard to believe; that it would come to pass, because I’ve come to realize that the saying, “quick money is a scam” is true. And those opportunities are around every corner, just that the beginning of any venture would be difficult. Truly, I never believed all these, till I became a living testimony to those facts.

I went straight to the door, and opened it for Aisha to come in. Aisha was my cousin who had come all the way from Maiduguri to spend some time with me before going back to school. She was the only cousin I was very fond of, but could be very stubborn and liked the wayward life a lot.

“How many times have I warned you about this lifestyle?”

“Sister, I know you are rich and classy, but please allow me to enjoy my life at least. I’m trying to be independent just like you.”

“Hello! I didn’t make my money this way alright.”

“Sister I know you are the best daughter and a model for us all, but please don’t tell me you didn’t enjoy your life while you were my age.”

“Let me tell you Aisha, life has many stages. It’s time you start growing and developing yourself and stop deceiving yourself with this get rich quick scheme.”

“I was only ten years old when my dad was duped by a Bulgarian who came into the country to make some transactions, and met my dad who went to Enugu for his own transactions. Dad was duped and everything was gone in a twinkle of an eye. We started from grade one, or so I call it, because mum had to start buying some products and selling them. But with Allah being on our side, especially mine, I was able to finish my studies. I studied Information Technology in school.

“After my university days, I started job hunting. I went to all places in Maiduguri but without success. One day my friend Halima called me to come to Lagos and search for my destiny—it was funny the way she said it. Being the only daughter and the first child at that, it was very difficult to leave my parents and siblings. Dad felt that I was overstepping my boundaries because he had allowed me to go to the university, and because of the pleas from my aunties who were not given the chance of studying, but to get married at an early age with or without falling in love with the person or even knowing who the person was.

“Dad later succumbed and allowed me to travel to Lagos in search of my destiny, because mum was able to convince him that our generation was supposed to be given a chance to explore life and know  real life.”

***********

“On the 26th of June, 2014, I left Maiduguri for Lagos around 9am, after much encouragement from Mum and Dad.

“We were traveling fine until we got to Benue; around that bridge when we heard the staccato burst of gunshots. Our driver decided to take another route to escape them, but luck was not on our side that day, the route we took was actually the path of the main robbery. When we came face to face with the robbers, everybody started praying to their God the way they knew how. I brought out my prayer book and started praying to Allah to save us from these robbers.

“ ‘Hey! you come down now, everybody come down,’ ” they shouted till all of us in the bus were kneeling and shaking. “ ‘You all are looking good, but be careful, don’t even try to play smart with us,’ ” they said. I was still praying to Allah when one of them gave me a slap that I will never forget in my entire life; the slap came with stars in my eyes, I was dizzy for a full two minutes before I regained my bearings. Till today, I can’t figure out why he slapped me. They collected all our phones and money and turned to leave, when a man’s phone started ringing and before one could say  ‘hey’ we heard the siren of the policemen coming towards us.

“The robbers came back and took me with two other girls that were in the bus and shot the man whose phone had rang that time. I guess he died instantly because it was directly on his head. They also shot two other persons, but I don’t know their fates because they drove off with us. Then I prayed that the policemen would meet up with us, but after about five minutes I stopped hearing the siren. I lost hope.

“Shouting was not even an option because no one would hear me; not even the three of our voices joined together could do anything or bring anything positive. When we passed a village, I made a sign to the girls to scream and we did; but what happened to us was terrible.

“What happened to you?” Aisha asked me, with anxiety written on her face.

“Well Aisha, they hit our heads with their guns and we blanked out. When I woke up, I discovered that I was in the middle of River Benue, with my hands tied very tightly. I felt intense pain around my thighs, and knew that I had been raped; my pride had been taken away from me without my consent, and to say they are heartless to have thrown me into the river would be an understatement.

“I shouted and the shouts kept coming back to me, immediately I saw something coming closer to me, at first I didn’t know what it was because it was getting late already, but when it came closer to me, I discovered that it was a crocodile. Suddenly something shook me and I fell inside the river. I didn’t know I had been on top of a crocodile till what I called its wife came looking for her husband. My hands were tied, I couldn’t swim, all I did was to close my eyes and ask Allah to accept my soul because I had already lost hope.

“Suddenly, I heard a voice saying, “Give me your hands.” I thought I was hallucinating or probably dead, until a hand pulled me up and into the canoe that was there. The crocodiles were already clenching my clothes in their teeth, but the Samaritan used his cutlass to hit the head of one and it went low. Then the other one went after us.

“The Samaritan paddled his canoe with the fastest speed I have ever seen. And before I knew it we were already on dry ground. He asked me to run and I did; I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, but then I stopped because I could not hear any footsteps behind me. I decided to go back and check for him. When I went back, I found out that he had already killed the crocodile and was cutting it. He then took me home to his parents’ house and I slept off.”

***********

“Ayomide is the name of the Samaritan that saved me from the hands of those crocodiles.

“Wow, Sister. Allah be praised,” Aisha said to me, “how were you able to overcome that trauma of rape, robbery and the crocodile?”

“Hmm! I don’t think it was a good thing for me, but a part of me told me to stop worshiping Allah; that he couldn’t even save me from the robbery after all the prayers that I said to him, I saw reasons why I should detest Him, but another part of me started reminding me of how Allah had made my own journey to be nice.

“ ‘What about the other girls that they kidnapped? What about the crocodile that you were lying on and it didn’t kill you all the while? What about those that they shot at the spot and they died? Are you better than them?’ ”

“Those were the words that got imprinted in my head while I was staying at Ayomide’s house. I didn’t stay long there; after spending a day there, I regained my strength and traveled to Lagos. When I got there I met with Halima who was already worried sick because I’d already told her that I would be arriving the day before. I rested and told her all that happened to me, I called home and Dad picked and informed mum to tell her that finally I was alive. They said they were praying for me because they didn’t hear from me again, and they also called Halima who told them that my number wasn’t going through and that I hadn’t arrived yet. I didn’t bother telling them about what happened, but I summarized the story and told them that we were attacked by robbers and that was it.

“I didn’t know how to tell Dad that I had lost my pride to unknown men, he would have understood but would also be disappointed, because it was in our tradition for a lady to get married with her virginity still intact. The in-laws will cherish the lady like an egg, and any lady that comes in without it will be considered a wayward child. No wonder they get us married at an early age of fourteen when they think we know nothing and we are innocent Aisha said.

“Aisha, they get some of us married at the age of twelve. Have you forgotten that Hauwa was married off at that age?”

“Oh! It’s true sister. Please continue your story, I really want to know all about it.”

“Aisha, please pity me, it’s almost 2am in the morning and you know I have lots of things to do tomorrow.”

“Okay, but promise me you will continue tomorrow morning when you have time, because I can’t see myself sleeping well if I don’t get promised.”

“Alright, I will continue tomorrow by 4pm when I must have attended the important occasion I have tomorrow, then I will attend to you Aisha, the story listener.” We laughed and went to bed.

When I went to my room, I prayed to Allah, thanking him for all his mercies and goodness upon my life, for I still wouldn’t believe that I would be where I was today. I was still smiling when I was taken into the world of sleep.
